So be it, your highness. You will not contest this painful kindness.

Because, in the end, he will end up accepting what comes to pass if he must.

It's not like you desire death more than living, but if protecting Prince Ruit may come at the cost of your own life someday, then so be it. You've sworn to be a blade that wards death, even if it inevitably breaks in the process.

Let him grieve if he must. What matters is that he and his world stay alive and well.

For what use is a pawn that survives on a board with a dead king?

You are not that kind of piece.

Captain Lune Umbra is a human who serves as the Head of the Royal Guard under Prince Ruit. Both she and the prince are rather close, having fought in the Human and Monster War together. She dual-wields swords of a different kind than Nino's in combat. She is an Umbran who perfectly lives up to the Umbra clan's reputation of high combat prowess.

She is first introduced in the human town of Icicle Bay, along with Kaji Pyxis, her subordinate. In stark contrast to her winged companion, Lune is treated with quite a bit of respect by the residents of Icicle Bay, as is evident in her initial chat with the local jewelry trader. Even Kaji, who has quite the distaste for humans, holds a high opinion of Lune.

Lune's ability is Mirror. It allows self duplication, and extends to letting her be in multiple places at once if needed. When Lune uses Mirror, her copies appear to rise up from her own shadow. Lune's mastery level is perfect, and she has reached the state of Resonance at a young age. Lune has become known as The Army of One on the battlefield and by her soldiers, due to this ability.

Appearance[]

Personality[]

She is rather stoic and reserved, though she can be quite sarcastic when appropriate, and will deliver biting remarks from time to time. Though a serious person, she's one to let her demeanor slip and amuse herself with humoring the antics of Ruit and Selene from time to time, though only when appropriate. Lune takes work seriously, and whenever said antics start interfering with work is where she draws the line for letting any frivolity slide.

Lune does not feel "normal" about herself, and has a hard time telling what others see her as, and what they think of her.

Background[]

Lune has had an unsparing upbringing as an Umbran, to which she largely owes the success in mastering her ability.

War has strongly affected Lune. She has developed an adamant resolve to never let the past losses repeat themselves. She deeply fears the possibility of the barrier being breached once more, and the idea of any more losses or harm being done to Prince Ruit, which she blames entirely on herself. The mere presence of a threat quickly agitates Lune, and as such, she holds a strict attitude against potential "intruders" who cross the barrier, wishing to deal with the matter on her own.

When the peace treaty was breached and humanity suffered its greatest losses of significant figures, Lune was the only one left behind. She was personally entrusted by both Lady Oshen and Princess Ruta to protect Prince Ruit, and to lead the royal guards. Lune was also instructed to act as a death messenger. She left the battlefield behind to deliver to Ruit the news of his parents' passing. Lune appears to heavily suffer from survivor's guilt as the sole survivor of that day, and feels that she must protect the human world and Prince Ruit as best as she can, to make worth of those sacrifices. Lune has little regard for her own life, wishing only to protect Ruit's life even if it means her death.

Relationships[]

Ruit[]

Lune is the closest personal guard of the prince, and perhaps the closest person to him in general. There are no formalities between the two of them. Ruit simply addresses Lune by her name, rather than her title as a captain or commander, which Lune states to be perfectly fine by her. In private, their interactions are rather friendly, though Lune sometimes speaks slyly, playing "mindgames" just to get the prince to be more honest in stating his true thoughts. Lune appears to be a voice of reason for Ruit, giving advice and hearing out his worries whenever he has any to share. Ruit gives Lune a lot of freedom in what she does with herself and the human world's army, but ultimately, Lune heeds his command.

She is unhappy with Ruit's desire to change himself for the sake of pleasing people, and does not think that it is the best course of action for the prince. She finds his growing self-doubt to be rather worrisome. According to Lune, Ruit has never treated her the way a servant should be treated, which she finds concerning as well. She believes that Ruit is good enough as he is, and is in no need of changing himself. This is exemplified by Ruit covering her unconscious body with a blanket. Lune states that Ruit is already "cool", crediting it to how much care he treats her with, which is something that Ruit himself appears to not realize or understand at all.

Lune believes that simply serving Ruit, protecting him, and being by his side is her entire purpose. She is deeply dedicated to the prince, acknowledging that she'd still remain by his side regardless of what he asks for, says, or does, and no matter the weight of the tasks she must carry out for his sake. However, she keeps this high degree of dedication a secret, stating that it "frightens the prince".

Lune dislikes seeing Ruit feeling the unique burden of embodying and ruling the human world, and wishes that she could understand his experience, at the very least.

Kaji[]

Lune finds Kaji's reluctance to mention anything if he's facing a problem to be worrisome, and finds him similar to the prince in that aspect. She apparently checks up on Kaji quite a lot, frequently encouraging him to do his best, trusting him to do his job and believing in his capabilities. Lune is ready to step into Icicle Bay and assist Kaji with anything at a moment's notice, though Kaji refuses the offer every time, a decision that Lune ultimately heeds and respects as a fair one.

According to Kaji, Lune would probably be disappointed if she found out he broke the law to give a pardon to Nino and his party members. This is likely true, due to the high importance Lune gives to maintaining peace and in dealing with little threat to it, no matter how small.

Selene[]

Lune and Selene maintain a longtime friendship. Lune disapproves of Selene's methods in building up and maintaining Prince Ruit's public image, but acknowledges that as the royal advisor, Selene is ultimately the better fit for the job. She admires Selene's sociable nature and confident self-image. Due to their clashing differences, Lune finds her chats with Selene to be both refreshing and maddening at once. Selene is one of the only people who is able to get past Lune's stoic exterior, even earning an uncharacteristically shaky reaction out of Lune's normally well-composed self.

Suvillan[]

Lune admits that Suvillan is not a foe to be taken lightly. She likely resents Suvillan for initiating a war and harming Ruit in the past.

Solis[]

Lune and Solis were friends at some point. After the peace treaty was breached, their opposing sides as monster and human dictated that the two become enemies. Later on, Lune apparently faced Solis in war when the barrier was breached. Although both have survived that encounter, it is unknown what their battle was like.

Sis[]

Lune is shown to be on friendly terms with Sis in the past. It is unknown what their current relationship is.

Etymology[]

A Lune is a shape in plane geometry. It is a crescent-shaped figure formed on a sphere or plane by two arcs intersecting at two points.

In French, Lune simply means “moon”.

Observations[]

  • Lune likes to read poems and books of philosophy along with writings of her own. She's quite impressive at it. She also really likes to experiment with tea brewing lately, for some reason. It's odd due to her personally preferring black coffee to any kind of tea.
  • Lune has extraordinary balance and rhythm in movements, making her the best at kendama.
  • Lune is ambidextrous.
  • Lune is the second character to have a geometric shape related given name, the first being Prince Ruit.
